jmunch: The sand has moved in this area of the sea bottom making this a poorer spot for a cache (and probably burying the cache). I may place another underwater cache in the future. Let me know if you would look for one if I did. There are a lot of unusual nudibranches nearby on some large rocks right now. . Check it out. JMunch

Geocache Description:

This is a SCUBA cache! To find it you must be certified as a SCUBA diver and skilled at diving in cold water.

San Carlos beach/Coast Guard Breakwater in Monterey, a favorite site for both recreational diving and classes, is in the Ed Rickets Marine Park. As such, it is not appropriate to use a motor boat here, because there are usually divers in the water. You are also not allowed to disturb any plant or animal life. The cache can easily be reached during a shore dive.

Near the breakwater wall, there is a large old anchor underwater. All that is exposed above the sand is about 3 feet of one prong in about 9 to 15 feet of water (depending on tide).

The coordinates given are of the anchor rather than the cache. Walk out along the wall with your GPS before your dive to get a fix on the anchor. GPS signals will not penetrate the water, so from the anchor you must use more traditional methods to find the cache.

The cache is on a bearing of 10 degrees (magnetic) from the anchor. Look for a weighted plastic box near an old, man made structure. Please do not disturb anything else, it is not well hidden! There is a plastic slate in the box for logging your visit while you are there. There is a plastic catch on the side of the box. Pull it away from the box to open.

While you are there look for Tube Anemones (Pachycerianthus fimbriatus) and their predator Giant Nudibranchs (Dendronotus iris).

Note: There is a "First to Find" pin, but otherwise this is a "take nothing, leave nothing" cache, because we don't want things left which could hurt the environment.
