Harper Meadows, in Winton Woods, contains eight reservable shelters. (Don’t forget your park permit. $5 gets you a yearly permit, and a park map!) This cache was designed to get you out walking, and should take at least an hour. If the weather’s nice, you can do this one by bicycle, or you can drive around. You will need a compass and a park map. Hopefully this cache gives you a little challenge, and brings back memories of another not far from here…
To begin, determine the number of shelters in Harper Meadows NOT named for winged creatures. (You can determine this easily if you enter from Corbett Rd.)
# Non-winged shelters = A
From the suggested parking area, look for 2 identical signs about parking. On the signs are listed a fine for parking illegally, and the code of law that enforces this fine.
Fine = $BCD ORC = EFGH.IJ
Standing between these signs, pursue a bearing of 120 degrees, for about 850 feet. At this location find a message that mentions “long” and “short” sounds.
# “Short” = K, # “Long” = L
Next, travel to the northernmost reservable shelter in the meadows. Look for a water source, which has three numeric digits engraved on it.
Faucet numbers = MNO
Standing by the faucet, pursue a bearing of 80 degrees for about 830 feet, and find the distance marker for the hike/bike trail.
Marker = P.Q mi
(Since the original campground entrance has been moved moved, I'll give you the speed limit - 5 mph.)
