Ghost of Upshur
County- Old Coffeeville
This cache is also part of our “Ghost of Upshur County” series
recognizing historic cemeteries in Upshur County, Texas.
Coffeeville was an important town in Upshur County as it was one
day’s travel out of the port of Jefferson. It was a bustling little
town by the time of the Civil War and became the site of a
Confederate training cam named Camp Tally.
In the early 1870’s the Rail Road came though and changed the
face of East Texas. Coffeeville was one of many towns the Rail Road
missed. This and the negative impact the Rail Road had on the Port
of Jefferson devastated Coffeeville. All that is left today is two
cemeteries, and a church.
There are three Historical markers near this cache, including
two near the road side and one in the cemetery itself.
