Geocache Description:

I set the Terrain rating at 2 due to the proximity of Hwy 8. Level ground but can be soggy due to heavy rain. Okay for children provide adult is with them.

Out past the hustle and bustle of the major urban centers is Gales Creek, Oregon. Please be careful as Hwy 8 can be busy at times. The cache is located in sight of the highway so beware of muggles passing by.

The cache is about the size of a loaf of bread. There is a camera in this cache. Please take your picture and record the frame number in both the logbook and on the (visit link) website. Additionally the cache is stocked with a variety of nice trinkets to exchange including a custom FTF certificate.

Please seal the top of the cache completely to keep the contents dry. Replace the cache exactly where it was found.

ON WITH THE HUNT! To locate the cache some historical background is required:

Gales Creek and Gales Peak nearby were named for Joseph Gale, who came to Oregon in 1834 with Ewing Young from California. He was born April 27, 1801, near Washington, D.C. He settled on the East Tualatin Plain and afterwards at the foot of Gales Peak, on a tributary of Tualatin River, and later in Eagle Valley, then in Union but now in Baker County.

Gale, in his younger days, followed the sea; afterwards, he became a trapper in the Rocky Mountains. Gale was master of the Star of Oregon, the first ship built in Oregon, which was launched in the Willamette River in 1841 and finished in 1842. Lt. Charles Wilkes gave him papers for sailing the Star of Oregon. He sailed the schooner to San Francisco Bay.

Together with Alanson Beers and David Hill, Gale constituted the executive committee of the provisional government, elected July 5, 1843. He died in Eagle Valley, Union County, Oregon, December 13, 1881.

Gales Creek Post Office, named for the stream nearby, was established September 10, 1874, with Lester Ray first Postmaster. The place was sometimes called Gales City. There was a station named Gales on the west-side railroad a little north of Gaston, but this had nothing to do with the community of Gales Creek.

The coordinates will start you at the Gales Creek Post Office (the cache is an easy walk from this starting point). Be sure to say "Hello" to Hunter if she is around.

First find the Zip Code and note the building's number. Now do a couple of story problems...

1. Add 15 years from the opening of the Gales Creek Post Office then reduce the answer by 1000. Next subtract the result from the rightmost three digits of the Post Office's building number. Divide this result by half and then divide again by 1000. Add the answer to the starting latitude's minutes giving the cache's latitude.

2. Subtract three years from the launching of the Star of Oregon then subtract the result from the difference of subtracting the four right digits of the Zip Code from the Post Office's building number. Divide the result by 1000 and add the answer to the starting longitude's minutes giving the cache's longitude.
