Cache is just a step off the causeway, another step and you'd be
in the swamp. We hiked this the day after 7 inches of rain, and
were able to stay dry footed with care.
Although there is no hunting on the SWFWMD lands, there is
hunting on the adjacent DOF property, which you drive through for
the trailhead at Burnt Bridge. Road remains open through all
hunts except SPECIAL-OPPORTUNITY TURKEY, generally held in March.
During this turkey hunt, recreational users cannot access the
SWFWMD lands from Burnt Bridge Road.
Purchased in the early 1990s, this property is part of a large
greenway of public lands that protects the Chassahowitzka Swamp
ecosystem and wildlife. The swamp supports Florida black bears. The
Chassahowitzka River’s headwaters, several tributaries and springs
are within this tract, a vast expanse of salt marsh, hardwood
swamps, crystal-clear springs and the river.
