Small cache (1l plastic container) hidden on another peninsula in
the Gariep Dam – overlooking “Die Hawe” (The Harbour) and the wall
of the Gariep Dam.
The Gariep Dam forms a natural safe harbour, known as “Die Hawe”
(The Harbour), which is the home of the Free State Yacht Club. In
the harbour a few beautiful yachts are anchored in quiet waters –
and what a sight to see. The cache is hidden between the rocks on
the peninsula nearest to the camping site. The wall of the dam can
be view from another angle and some of the larger vessels that
cannot enter the harbour are anchored nearby. The cache is hidden
on the hill overlooking the yacht basin – and from the hiding place
you’ll have a magnificent view of the impressive wall of the Gariep
Dam.
It is recommended to stay over at the Forever Aventura Gariep
Resort (camping and chalets available – 051-754 0045) and enjoy the
tranquillity and peace for at least a weekend. Day visitors are
allowed as well. To reach the cache you can either walk along the
road or mountain bike to within a short distance of the cache. The
last few hundred metres require a hike with a little jumping over
rocks and through thorny bushes – sturdy shoes recommended. (My
6-year old managed it quite well). No need to go into prohibited
area – then your GPSr is misleading you.
Don’t be misled by the
apparent short distance to another nearby cache (GCTBXD - View of
the wall) – you’ll have to cover quite a distance either on foot or
by bike to reach the other cache.
