Geocache Description:

An short walk to some great views of Lake Macquarie and a vague reference to 1980's TV ads.

A community developed on the island in the early 1920's.

In 1966 the Lands Department made the decision to evict the residents of the island (as the island was Crown Land)due to errosion problems.

In 1969 Mr Stewart MLA asked the Minister for Lands to delay the eviction of residents and that money be spent to prevent the island being submerged.

A decision was made in 1971 that only pensioners would be allowed to live on the island "during their lifetime" and all other residents would have to leave. In 1972 the residents blocked the one street into the island to prevent the demolition of 9 houses so that the land could be used as a park. The Trade Union also became involved and the residents were given a tempory reprieve when the demolition contractor abandoned the job.

By the late 1970's the last of the residents had left the island and in the early 1980's squatters moved into the remaining timber cottages until they were evicted in 1989 and the buildings were finally demolished.

The island is now a public park and reserve and a haven for birdlife. There is picnic and BBQ facilities available.

Please take care retrieving the cache - Screw it, Don't pull it!
