A História (the
history):
P: Almeida é um povoado (actualmente sede de
concelho) com origem provavelmente romana. Dos árabes ficou a
actual localização e o nome. Foi conquistada no Séc. XI por
Fernando Magno, mas reconquistada pelos mouros mais tarde. Foi
definitivamente integrada no reino de Portugal no Séc. XIII, quando
D. Dinis a tomou. Permaneceu uma importante praça forte durante o
fim da idade média e o renascimento. No Séc. XVII, construiram-se
as actuais muralhas, mais eficazes nos combates com artilharia. O
antigo castelo medieval, situado intra-muros, a oeste, foi
destruido durante uma das várias batalhas das guerras napoleónicas
que tiveram Almeida por palco.
E: Almeida is probably of roman origin. The moors
settled its present location and name. It was first conquered in
the eleventh century by Ferdinand I the Great of Castille, but for
a short period. In the thirteenth century, Almeida was conquered by
the portuguese king D. Dinis. It kept its importance as a military
post through the end of the middle ages and the Renaissance. In the
seventeenth century, the modern fortress was built, upgrading it to
artillery warfare. The old medieval castle, located inside the
perimeter of the fortress, to the west, was destroyed during one of
the many battles of the napoleonic wars that took place in
Almeida.
