Geocache Description:

The “SH” in the cache name above signifies a Spirit Hunt, a project by the Miami Valley Geocachers to distinguish those caches that are set in cemeteries or memorial gardens. This cache is part of that series created by MVG members to highlight cemeteries in the area. Please be respectful of the area. Cache should NOT be done after sunset.

This is the first cache to be located on the grounds of Wright State University. Permission was granted by the chief of University police and by the head of ground's maintenance. There is parking at the Rockafield house, which is currently only used for special events.

The Rockafield Cemetery on the university campus marks the location of the graves of the original owners of the Wright State University property. It seems fitting that the first geocache on WSU grounds recognize the past history of this land. Graves date from the mid-1800's.

The WSU School of Medicine Anatomical Gift Program manages the gifts of people who "gave unselfishly of themselves that others might learn." The historic cemetery was expanded, relandscaped and developed to inter and memorialize the cremated remains of donors whose decision it was to be interred on the campus rather than in a private cemetery or mausoleum.

A brick walkway has been installed in the new portion of the cemetery. Some donors' families and friends have had the names of their loved ones inscribed on individual bricks. Grateful medical school classes have purchased bricks bearing the names of those persons whose remains enabled their medical educations. On Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, tribute is paid to the veterans of the United States Armed Forces with the placement of veteran markers and American flags on each interment site.
