Reservoir Sheep Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Blorenges: Came this way to collect our cache for archiving. The box has lasted very well over (nearly) four years and the conditions today were similar to when we placed the cache in February '06 - Chilly but with periods of sun breaking through the clouds and wet and muddy underfoot. The reservoir sheep still look happy (well... as happy as sheep ever do) and the trees are mossy and bent around the old stone walls and ruins. We dipped a newly activated Robert Burns geocoin through the cache so that it can start its travels for an American geocacher and also the Scottish thistle coin. This is a pretty valley and there are more cachers around than there were 4 years ago so I'm hopeful that someone more local will place a new cache in this area soon. Thanks to all the past visitors.

Geocache Description:

The Welsh valleys are known for their industrial heritage. When coal was king, Cwmtillery was at the heart of the industry. Today, Cwmtillery colliery has gone, sheep have returned to the pastures and the reservoir serving the colliery provides a pleasant walk through history.

Park at N 51° 44.930 W 003° 08.018 by the lake. Please note that although you can drive up the road towards the reservoir there is no parking there. Walk up Cwm Tyleri either alongside the lake or the road with the bulk of Mynydd James to your left and Coity mountain to the right. The footpath is quite easy but does get very muddy in the wet and is not suitable for buggies. When you find the cache you can continue on the footpath to do a circular walk along the side of Mynydd James back to the car park. Cwmtillery has an excellent community website with detailed history of the area, the colliery and the people. The cache itself is a small plastic container which originally contained a Geocaching ‘sew on’ patch, Geocaching badge, fridge magnet, cup hooks, whistle and a pack of playing cards. This cache is the first within the County Borough of Blaenau Gwent, previously a cache wasteland!
