Geocache Description:

Netherton Pond and Dam (N55 21.695 W002 00.840) is a Grade 2 listed structure, situated on what was once part of the Lord Armstrong’s Cragside Estate.

The Dam was improved by Lord Armstrong when he acquired Barnfoot Farm, (500 yards down stream) in 1879. The purpose of the dam was to hold back a head of water, capable of driving a small 6 horsepower turbine, installed at the farm on Armstrong’s request, for corn threshing. The Fish Ladder beside the pond and dam was also installed at the request of Lord Armstrong, who was a very keen fisherman. It enabled fish to move through out the stream system by leaping a step at a time. Following repairs the ladder is now fully operational again. Flowing from the high Cheviot Hills, the clear waters of Netherton Burn join those of the Scrainwood Burn at Burnfoot Farm. Here they become the Wreigh Burn and then flow into the River Coquet at Thropton, before going on to the North Sea.
