Since this cache is downtown, you may have trouble with your
GPSr. However, the information listed here, combined with the rough
GPSr reading will get you there - all coordinates have been
validated using online tools.
While working downtown, I have been exploring the area to find
hideaways and greenways here in the concrete jungle. The second and
final waypoints are great places to take a break a bit away from
the traffic.
Here are the waypoints - don't forget to write down your numbers
in case you need them later:
1) Start at the posted coordinates where you will find an Art Deco
structure. Read the historical sign. When was this building built?
Convert the month to an integer, M. Consider the year to be ABCD.
Add (AB - C) to the last three numbers of the latitude (N
coordinate). Add (3 X M) to the last three numbers of the longitude
(W coordinate). Go there.
2) Here you will find "a curved shape in the vertical plane that
spans an opening", although it was originally not quite so open.
Read the historical sign to understand why, and find out what year
that freestanding shape was built. Consider that year to be EFGH.
Add (F + G - E) to the latitude and subtract (F + G - H) from the
longitude. Go there.
3) There is not an exact spot for this waypoint, because there are
several items to collect:
* How many Magnolia trees do you see here? Call that number
'T'. (Hint: if you do not know what a Magnolia looks like, I have
posted a picture of the large-leafed evergreen here for you, but
you need to spend more time caching in the Washington Park
Arboretum.)
* Walk towards the stairs with metal sculptures resembling
tools. How many sculptures are there? Call that number 'S'.
* 'File' yourself up those stairs and to the right to reach
the upper level. How many permanent concrete planters with attached
benches do you see on this level? Call that number 'P'.
4) The final is in an artistic hideaway located at: N 47 36. C, (S
+ P), D; W 122 20.(T - S - P), D, F. Here you will find at least 2
sculptures, 2 murals, and landscaping in an area tucked away from
the streets.
Final notes: There is no need to dig or plunder. Sometimes one
can do their best thinking in a seated position... Bring your pen,
and please be discreet! Please feel free to email me if you
have questions. Congratulations to BHMP on the FTF!
Update 04/10/2006: Thanks to Shunra for the idea to move the cache,
and Slatrat for actually moving it. I wish you both excellent
caching karma. This was not an issue on the night that this cache
was placed, so your help makes life better for future
cachers.
Update 12/19/2006: Thanks to Grunchley for pointing out that there
is some construction - one of the concrete planters is visible, but
hiding behind a construction fence. Make sure to include it in your
count!
Update 03/30/2007: Thanks to scottru for reporting that the
construction is now complete.
