Geocache Description:

In 1816 Gervails Craig was still 15 when he left Ireland for Canada. Expropriated from his first farm on the Rideau Canal near Lansdowne Park, Gervais acquired land near Black Rapids in the 1840s. Tragically, the original farmhouse he built was lost in the Great Fire of 1870. The land passed down through the families until it was expropriated in 1963 by the National Capital Commission and became part of the Greenbelt.

William Kennedy lived in Nepean from 1831, and in the 1850s moved to Jockvale. Wiliam's lot expanded to include 300 acres of land, where his family would live for the next four generations. The Original Kennedy farmhouse was sold in 1946 and is adjoined today by the Barrhaven Fellowship Christian Reformed Church.

These families were joined and intertwined when two Kennedy sisters married two Craig brothers.

For this cache, most direct access to the Kennedy-Craig forest can be found at 45 17.398 75 43.170, though this can be easily combined with another cache I have setup in the area.

Start on the trail, but you will need to select a point at which to bushwack from. When the cache was being setup, the small stream provided an interesting water hazard. Was able to cross the stream via a convenient log, and I was glad I had my hiking pole with me to keep stable and not fall into the creek.

Cache contents

  • golf ball
  • Canterbury Cathedral eraser (thanks Bluelamb)
  • Navi worldwide yellow butterfly fish keychain
  • Steinlager beer pin
  • decals: "Idling gets you Nowhere"
  • Ladybug from BugsLife
  • mini toy flashlight

You will also find a logbook, pencil, sharpener, and small Geocaching Manifesto.

Please ensure you hide the cache in a similiar way it was found. Lots of evidence of wildlife in the area, and there were constant sounds of woodpeckers in the forest while I was setting up the cache. Enjoy.
