Geocache Description:

Located on Iowa Hill Road east of Colfax.

The road to Iowa Hill, originally Rice’s Grade, became a toll road in 1854 and connected gold rich Iowa Hill with the town of Colfax (Illinoistown). Remnants of Rice’s Grade are still visible today though most of it has been obliterated by rockslides and the construction of today’s Iowa Hill Road. If you would like to know more about Rice’s Grade, obtain “The Road to Iowa Hill” 1999, by Sharon Balmain.

In 1874, Mary Adge, proprietor of Iowa Hill Hotel, and her driver, Edward Donaldson were drowned attempting to cross rain swollen Butcher Creek. This creek crossing became known as Adge Crossing in honor of Mary Adge.
