Geocache Description:

In a lonely field, partially hidden by an unchecked growth of shrubs, bushes and weeds, are a number of stone floor slabs and, within a protective circle of fencing, an octagonal stone stump with a moulded base and capital. These are the remains of the church of St. Denis which, until recently, stood on this site and served the ever dwindling community of Faxton Village. Take your time to look around this site as you might miss some of the remains under the long grass.

The History:

In 1901 the church and eleven houses was described, while another account of the village from the late 1920s identifies a few cottages, the church and almshouse ruins. The church eventually fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1958 leaving only these few remnants, with some of its fittings transferred to churches in Kettering and Lamport, or to the Victoria and Albert Museum.

One house is all that remains at Faxton, while nearby Faxton Grange might almost be said to be in Lamport

Directions:

You can drive close to the remains by taking the B576 off the A508, followed by a right turn to the village of Old. Here take the Left turn at the church and the left fork road out of the village. About 1 1/2 miles north stands Old Lodge with a narrow track leading down sloping ground to the left. Use the co-ordinates (SHORT) to find this location. Don't take the private road in front of you - go through the gate and follow the bridleway. Keep the yellow coloured house on your left at all times..!! (in other words - go around it and not in the straight line that the GPS will be telling you!)

Alternatively, you can park the car at the co-ordinates (LONG)  and go cross country by taking the Bridleway to Faxton. Make sure that you still leave some access to the field by parking close to the hedge. The overall distance to the cache and back is about 4 kms and the terrain is mostly farmer's fields and therefore requires some level of fitness to complete. This route takes you along what was probably the main access to the village and has some lovely views across the fields but beware - this way can be fairly overgrown and can lead to some itchy seeds getting into your shoes..!

Long trousers are also recommended for this route and it is not suitable for wheelchairs or push chairs.

The cache is an ammo box and contains an information booklet describing the village and it's occupants. Please leave this in the cache so that others can enjoy it...
