Geocache Description:

Union Church is a weathered brick monument to the ones who established their house of worship on the hill. It probably attracts more attention now than it did a hundred years ago, because of what remains standing. The remains are all that is left of the third church that was built here. The first established in 1727, was used for awhile and abandoned. About 1755 or 1760, a second church was built and was used until after the Revolutionary War. The building was used to a limited extent by different denominations until it burned about 1818. The townspeople removed the ruined bricks to several feet above ground level and rebuilt a new sanctuary to be used on rotating Sundays as a church for worship by Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Baptists, and Methodists. During the Civil War, Union Church was used as a hospital for the wounded, probably of the Federal Army. A rainstorm, in 1950, reduced the church to what is seen today.
