Geocache Description:

The cache is NOT located at the above coordinates.

Recent visitors to the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park probably noticed a new addition to Kennesaw mountain. It’s a new communications antenna located near the top of the mountain at the above coordinates. The antenna’s height is 112 feet and because its base is at an elevation of 1760 feet, its top is well above the trees at the top of the mountain. It is very obvious in places around Marietta that have a view of the mountain. Many people assume that the tower is another cell phone installation but, in fact, it is a public safety radio tower that serves county and federal public safety agencies including the National Park Service. Since the tower can be seen from a considerable distance, we thought that it would make a good starting point for a cache hunt. Because caches are prohibited on Kennesaw Mountain NBP property, the cache location is not located in the battlefield park. The cache is hidden in a spot determined by the shadow cast by the radio tower on the mountain. If you were to be at the cache location on July 29, 2006, then the shadow cast by the tip of the tower would pass overhead at exactly 5:56:23 AM Eastern Standard Time because the apparent sun altitude will be 1.22 degrees at that time. The height of the antenna may be found above and you may assume that the elevation at the cache location is 1100 feet. Because of the very shallow angle of the tower’s shadow so soon after sunrise, it is difficult to maintain precision in calculating the cache location. Therefore, the actual location of the cache is given as N XX XX.337, W YYY YY.323. Finding the degrees and minutes part of the coords is up to you. The cache is a lock & lock container covered with cammo tape. A Kennesaw Mountain NBP hiking stick medallion is the prize for the first to find.
