Geocache Description:

In the Crooked Oak Country the cache is placed where you can see a cone shaped sentinel butte that rises 1200 feet above the prairies. Sioux Indians call the butte MatoPaha or sleeping Bear Mountain. It is regarded as a holy place by many of the Plains Indians. Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, and other Indian leaders came here, and an Indian conference was held in 1857 to discuss the encroachment of white settlers and gold prospectors in the region.
For more than a century the butte has also drawn scientists from far and wide. Among geologists it is a famous example of laccolith. Formed millions of years ago by a great upheaval of molten rock, it is a volcano that never erupted. Bear Butte, (also a prominent land mark for the pioneers), was registered a natural landmark in 1965.
The cache is not on or under the fence. You will not have to cross the fence to find the container. The container is too small for trade items; bring your own pencil. Please be careful if the area is wet; there are some wide places on the gravel road for parking. It’s a bad caching day when one is stuck in the sticky gumbo soil. Thanks, and have a great caching day!
