Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This cache is NOT for small children or to hunt at night. I have
also been informed that with the warmer weather a large ant
population near the cache has become active so spot it, grab it,
and move away a bit!! At no time do you NEED to get close to the
edge. However, there are some SERIOUSLY LONG DROPS and stuff to
trip over around here. Kids are kids, check this one out on your
own, preferably not alone, first please.
This cache is on the North Shore Property owned by the Avista Corp.
And open to the public. Parking is free at coords N47° 50.355,
W117° 49.396. There is a campsite at the lake, just follow the road
down the hill, way..down..the..hill.., Dogs are cool but no
motorized anything. We have no idea how far this property goes to
the left, we only went to our caches to the right. If your coming
out here you may want to see the other caches that are out this
way. Just follow the map out HWY 291.
This cache takes you near to the old look out point above Long Lake
Dam, above being the operative word here and the reason for the
warning. It was billed as the worlds tallest dam at it's completion
in 1915. It took 500 men a long time to do this. Most stuff came by
buck board and they had a small town out here. The area around this
cache was obviously some kind of staging area, maybe a crane or
cable lift. There is iron hardware embedded in the rock everywhere
so watch your step.
As you leave your car you may want to check out our cache we hid on
the way back from this one, omgiapsfam, You'll figure it out soon
enough. A nice easy one right out of the car to get you warmed up.
It has nothing to do with the big one. It's just that sometimes
opportunity smiles on you. These are not difficult caches. It takes
a while to drive out here and we want you to have time to look
around and enjoy the area. The hike is a little more than a mile
round trip, and you can make it difficult if you want to. This is a
small ammo can, it has a log, a pencil, and my favorite swag,
safety whistles and a TB. Bring a lunch, there's a great spot above
the cache that just cries for a quiet moment. N47° 50.232 W117°
50.263
Another point of interest you can find as you get closer to the
cache and head toward the old lookout, you pass the spot that we
call "even steven". N47° 50.262 and W117° 50.262. We've never seen
the numbers equal out like that before. When you get there, go on
up the hill to the old look out.
Is that another micro I see over there to the right?
You're pretty close to the cache at this point but DO NOT climb
those rocks!!! Go back the way you came!! While we were at the
cache and while I was busily arranging swag, log, and pen, Mary (my
so much better half) asked me, "what the heck is this?", I told her
it is most likely a spot to set up a transit to shoot elevations to
other known spots like this to see if the dam has sunk since 1989.
It says WWP CO with 1989 on it. N47° 50.240 W117° 50.293, it's very
close to the cache so try and find it.
This is just a shot of my roaming GPS again. See if you can find
this spot on your way out from the cache.
We hope you enjoy this area as much as we do, and will come back
again soon. There's a park across the river, you can see it from
the old look out point, go over the bridge and the first road on
the left, it has a play ground and a good spot to fish. That's a
spot to take the kids!! So, I would suggest you go to evensteven
first and then on up a short ways to the old look out point. then
find the cache, the geo marker, and the tree the roaming GPS likes,
then around the big rocks and up to the top for a break. The view
is great from up here.
