Geocache Description:



The lower Mystic River has several parks stretching from Medford, through Somerville into Everett. This series of caches will be centered in the area bordered by routes 93, 16 and 28. (Some to the east of 28 and some to the north of 16.) This area is primarily known as the Mystic River Reservation, although it is also know as Ten Hills parkway, Torbert MacDonald Park and River Bend Park. These caches will always give you a nice walk along the Mystic.



This is one of a series of 6+ caches located around the Mystic River in Medford and Somerville. The Mystic River Reservation is a jewel of a greenway in the mists of the urban sprawl. There is a lot of history in this area and some cool scenic views. This series, when done, will provide a full day’s worth of caching for some. Others will burn through it in 3 hours or less.

General info on the series:
A lot has been said about my ecliptic style of cache placements. Some are absolutely beautiful, some not. Each one has been a bit different than the last. Some are quite hard, others too easy. I make no apologies, but I do promise that there is something here for everyone. This is a great area for walking the dog, strolling with the kids, fishing, watching wildlife or just watching the river and traffic go by.

In this area over the next 6 weeks I will be releasing 2 traditional caches, 2 multi caches and 2 puzzle caches for a total of 6 caches. Each set will consist of a hard one and an easy one. For those who want the easy stroll, skip the hard ones. If you want more of a challenge, do the hard ones too. At the bottom of the page is a listing of the caches and what you can expect from them. Easy is defined by me as a combined difficulty and terrain of 3 or less and hard as 5 or more.

What you need to know for this cache:
Either way you will be walking about 1/2 a mile. The cache is camouflaged and needs to be replaced exactly as found. (There are instructions with the cache incase you are confused.) The cache is a small cache and can take small trades. Please don’t give away the store in your logs. If you get stumped as to where to look, you can email for a hint that will let you know you are looking in the right place. As with all the Into The Mystic, read the general words of caution below and follow those that apply.

General words of caution/note:

I am writing these in a very general manner and will post them on all the caches. Some will be meaningful for this cache, some won’t. You decide based on what you read and see.
  • Part of the area around the Mystic is clearly mark as a wildlife habitat and signs are posted prohibiting humans in certain area, especially in the reeds – OBEY those signs
  • As with any caching endeavor, use common sense and caution while searching for caches:
    • Don’t risk life or limb to retrieve a cache, it is not necessary
    • When caching follow local laws for parking and avoid trespassing on private property
    • Watch out for muggles, especially unfriendly ones
    • At least one of the caches I would not recommend doing at night because the area it draws you to is somewhat secluded (I will point that out on that page)
  • Please be respectful of the hides and replace them as found, camo and all
  • Watch out for red herrings
  • If you find a red herring, there may be additional information to help you find what you are looking for
  • Some of the cache containers are special made and could be damaged if dropped or mishandled
  • None of the caches are on school, State Police or private property
  • Rocks are not always rocks, branches are not always branches, but caches are always caches
  • If you have to move anything to look under or behind, please make sure you put it back
  • None of the waypoints require you to walk in traffic, dodge cars or go swimming
  • No special tools are required for removing and replacing the caches
  • Not everything is down low, some may even be at eye level
  • The caches are mostly a terrain 1 until you get to within 30 feet of the cache

  • Easy Traditional- (D1/T1.5) Half mile round trip along a paved path until you are within 30 feet or less. FTF doublewe

  • Easy Puzzle- (D1.5/T1.5) Starts on the south side of the river. Bring the cache page with the instructions. Less than a half mile walk. FTF baby jogger
  • Hard Multi- (D3/T2) Designed to allow you to do the stages while completing the other caches. Stages are micros. Total walk (one could drive to different parking for each stage) is 2-4 miles. FTF doublewe
  • Hard Puzzle- (D5/T2) Tough one to crack. Multi-stage micros with a camouflaged final. Half mile round trip. FTF HockeyPuck
  • Easy Multi- (D2/T1) Nice paved pathways good for strollers. Easy to find magnets and an obvious final. About a half mile round trip. FTF ????????
