Geocache Description:

Many ways to go to this, some paved, some pine trails.

Welcome to Mansfield Hollow Wildlife Area State Park in North Windham,CT. Depending on your choice of trails, this can be fairly easy, or pretty hilly. The trail out the back of the parking area is on a nice ridge thru pines, really nice hike. As you enter the parking area there is an old paved road most of way. Another thru the fields and pines to the right of the parking area. Very scenic and there are trails around much of the lake.

Cache is Ammo box container. This area was once a farm but much of it us under the water now. You will see roads, old stone walls, cellar holes etc going into the water. Along the brook, there are beaver working. there is also an old ice house out there made of brick. Be careful with kids if hiking the brook area, very steep drop offs. No swimming allowed in this park.

"This area is the Field Trail and Wildlife Management Area. It is open to hunting, and is used by the Field Trail people teaching their dogs hunting and retrieval. The area is used on many weekends for dog field trials.
When this happens, it is closed to other use. There will be signs at the parking area if it is for field trials only that day.

Hunting is allowed here in the fall from mid October thru December so do wear orange at that time of the year as you would in any hunting area and or just go on Sundays."

Lots of nice views in this area of the lake, Natchug River, Army Corps of Engineers dike,Mansfield dam and some really nice hiking trails. One could spend a day here hiking no problem. In the pines you will see glacial
deposits with deep kettle holes all over from the ice back then. They are all pines now and a great spot to walk around.

The parking lot is at the end of North Windham Road at N 41* 45.120 and W 072 09.686 If you like longer hikes, park near the boat launch and follow the path around the lake....Really a nice hike, mostly thru pines. This area is also used by horse back riders, Mt.bikers, hikers, fisherman, bird watchers, snow shoe hikers, cross country skiers etc...
THIS IS A VERY DRY AMMO BOX. GREAT CACHE FOR TRAVEL BUGS.

IMPORTANT NOTE-IMPORTANT NOTE-IMPORTANT NOTE Hunting is allowed on this land. Be sure to wear orange in hunting season and use caution.
