Geocache Description:

This journey is part of a cache series commemorating the travels of Leatherman in the late 1800s.

Leatherman once roamed SW Connecticut and SE New York from 1858 to 1889. He traveled a 365-mile loop between the Connecticut and Hudson rivers. Approximately every month he would repeat his journey. The man spoke primarily with grunts or gestures and dressed in crudely stitched leather from his hat to his shoes. The suit was made of soft-tanned calfskin leather and weighed about sixty pounds. He would sleep outside year-round mostly in caves around Connecticut and New York. More information on Leatherman can be found at this site.

The hike to a cave likely to have been one of Leatherman's hideaways has two possible routes:

Route A (easier): follow the trail and blazes uphill from the parking area until you reach an intersection at the "intersection" coordinates noted below. At the intersection, bear left and continue until you see No Trespassing signs several hundred feet in front of you. DO NOT cross this boundary, in fact don't go near it - instead, turn directly right and head for the cliffs. Hug the cliffs and go toward the cache coordinates listed at the top of the page. The trail there is clearer (with blazes) and does not cross the boundary! Follow the satellites to the cache page coordinates!

Route B (difficult): follow the trail and blazes uphill from the parking area until you reach an intersection at the "intersection" coordinates noted below. At the intersection, bear right and continue on a less maintained, yet blazed, steeper trail upto and onto the cliff band. Follow the trail past the first grand view until you come to a second grand view at the "Grand View" coordinates noted below. Here's where the fun really starts! Please do not consider this 4.5 terrain scramble unless with a friend who is capable of helping you if you fall. The blazes actually go over and down the cliff in a giant jumble of rocks and holes. Follow the blazes through the jumble until you are on flat ground. Wait for the satellites to catch up and go find those cache page coordinates!

At the cache page coordinates you will find written instructions on where to find the final cache, an ammo can hidden where there is no satellite reception! Enjoy!

Once you have found your bounty, taken in the surroundings, and are ready to move on, you once again have a choice. Go back the way you came or go the opposite route for either an easy or very difficult jaunt back to the parking area. Either way the round trip will tally a little over a mile.
