Geocache Description:

This is an easy 4-part Multi-Cache that will take you along the Upper Charles River greenway, in parts of Newton and Waltham. This is the most recently completed part of the greenway created by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). You will cross a new majestic footbridge that spans the Charles, and will see an abandoned railroad bridge. All trails are flat and following all clues will take you on a round trip that can done in just over an hour.

The coordinates given will take you a parking area in front of the public swimming pool in Newton. Leave your car or bike here. You will need to find a sign with the name of the pool to get to stage 1. The coordinates of stage 1 are:
42° 21.x80 N
071° 12.y67 W
The number x is the number of letters in the first name of the person the pool is named for, and the number y is 2 times the number of letters in his last name.

Stage 1:
You must find the family name of the woods you just walked through to get the coordinates to stage 2. The coordinates of stage 2 are:
42° 21.xx0 N
071° 12.yy3 W
The number x is the number of letters in the family name of the woods +3. The number y is the number x -1. When walking to stage 2, be careful crossing the street and please use the light at the crosswalk.

Stage 2:
You must find information about the bridge to get the coordinates to stage 3. The coordinates of stage 3 are:
42° 22.1yy N
071° 13.xxx W
The number x is the number of letters in the first word of the bridge’s name. The number y is the number x plus the number of letters in the word that is above the name of the bridge.

Stage 3:
You must find a plaque with some information about the foot bridge. NOTE: Please do not walk on the abandoned railroad bridge, as it is very dangerous and there is nothing hidden up there. You will find the cache at:

The number a is the last digit on the plaque. The number b is 2 times a. The number c is the third digit on the plaque. The number d is the sum of the numbers on the plaque. The number e is the sum of the first and last digits. The number f is the 2nd digit.

The cache is located in a 5 inch by 9 inch plastic container, and contains the usual spiral notebook and an assortment of key chains. Everyone has spare keychains around, so bring one (a small one) with you so you can take one and leave one of yours. Don’t forget to sign the book. Please replace the container in the same place that you found it and cover it carefully.
