Geocache Description:

The listed coordinates do not lead to the cache. You must decipher them from the text below...

The Italian Jerome Cardano (1501 - 1576 AD) is reputed to have been the first to have used the Grille Transposition Cipher. Transposition ciphers are rarely encountered nowadays. They differ from both code systems and substitution ciphers, in that the letters or numbers of the plaintext are shifted about to form a cryptogram. This can be done in a number of ways, and some systems exist where even whole words are transposed, rather than individual letters. One way to achieve transposition is by means of a so called Grille. A grille usually consists of a square piece of cardboard with cut-out apertures. The grille is placed on a piece of paper, then, the message is written in the squares of the grille.

Below is the cryptogram of the cache coordinates. It will be impossible to solve without the Grille. In order to obtain the Grille, you must first solve the Analysis of Criminal Codes and Ciphers Chapter 3 cache. On the inside of the cache lid is a web address, which will provide you with the Grille. Place the North label of the grille on the Top of the cryptogram and read the coordinate numbers from left to right. Flip the grille 180 degrees to place the West label on the Top to reveal the West coordinates. No fair sharing the web address with friends!           Class dismissed...
