Geocache Description:

This is the second cache to be placed in the grounds of the National Coal Mining Museum for England at Overton, midway between Huddersfield and Wakefield on the A642 in West Yorkshire.

The other cache you might like to attempt whilst on site is Caphouse Capers - Going Underground (GCG2D4) (visit link)

The museum is open every day (except Xmas Eve/Xmas Day/Boxing Day and New Years day) from 10.00am to 5.00 pm. and admission is free. (visit link) It provides a fascinating insight into the history of coal mining brought to life through interactive exhibitions and displays and you can even take an underground tour all free of charge! There is a restaurant/snack bar and gift shop on site as well.

The museum has recently opened a new extension based on the imaginatively restored colliery buildings of adjoining Hope Pit. These now host a fascinating assortment of interactive audio/visual displays and virtual guides about the science of coal mining upon which the clues to find “All Hope is not Lost” are based.

(PLEASE NOTE IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT THE HOPE PIT EXTENSION SOMETIMES APPEARS TO CLOSE EARLY AROUND 3:00PM IF THER ARE NOT MANY PEOPLE AROUND ... SO PLAN TO DO EARLIER IF YOU CAN TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT)

The coordinates given are the start of your search for clues at Hope Pit .... the way points below give you the Car Park and museum reception where you must go first and pick up an admission ticket (free) a map and the information leaflet “Discover the science of coal mining at Hope Pit”. Whilst here you may want to book an underground tour (free) for later and have a look around the gift shop which is stacked with goodies suitable for caches.

Now find your way up to Hope Pit – its 300m west of reception or you can catch the train if its running from just outside reception (small charge)

You can also do this cache as an extension of the other Caphouse Capers Caches

Caphouse Capers - Going Underground (Revisited) (visit link)
Caphouse Capers - The Reed Beds (visit link)
Caphouse Capers - The Settling Ponds (visit link)

Once at Hope Pit, using the site map to go to the following locations and answer these questions:

1.The Workshops (Map Reference #25)
A) - What is the maximum speed of the little locomotive with a name very similar to that of a well known (some would say infamous) West Yorkshire cacher - Is it 23, 24 or 25 kph

C) – In what year did Stanley Collinson get presented with a model jack … was it 1965, 1975 or 1985

2.The Compressor House (Map Reference # 26)
D) - Compressor No 2 …. Is it a Hydrovane 178, 188 or 198?

3.The Winding Engine House (Map Reference #30)
Here Eric the virtual foreman will talk to you! … Listen carefully – it’ll make yer eyes water!
E) – What time did he start – was it 5:30, 5:40 or 5:45
F) – How many miners did he have to get down t’pit between 6 and 6:30 – was it 120, 150, or 170?

Now outside to find the cache which is located at:

N53 (A+14).(C-B-D)-813

Good luck ...
