SPOR Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Happy Humphrey: The SPOR has disappeared, and the ammo box is in a poor condition. So there seems little point in continuing with this cache. I hope that most of the visitors enjoyed my little trick, and that a suitable replacement cache appears in the area at some point.

Geocache Description:

Located on Santon Head, near to one of the most appealing sections of the coastal footpath (Raad ny Foillan, "Way of the Gull").

Approach can be made from the west (Port Grenaugh - recommended: use the parking waypoint below) or the east (following Raad ny Foillan from Santon).

This cache site has been selected to lead you on a short walk which includes some of the finest coastline on the island. With superb coastal views, an attractive footpath, and the chance to log two more caches along the way, the track to the SPOR should prove an enjoyable excursion. You should see plenty of sea birds on the way, black swans, seals and the rare chough.

Archaeological interest includes at least two Iron Age promontory forts (at 54°06.166'N, 4°34.497'W and 54°06.203'N, 4°32.751'W), which were later used from Norse times as lookout posts.

Find this cache as part of a walk starting at Port Grenaugh and taking in "Eat, Drink and be Merriu", "SPOR", and "Derringer" before returning along the same route, turning off just west of the footbridge at 54°06.122'N, 4°33.770'W to finish via the splendid Arragon House.

Depending on the exact route chosen, this should take about two hours (three and a half miles). The "SPOR" cache is just over a mile from Port Grenaugh. There are some steep sections along the way (slippery when wet), and boots or shoes with good grip are advisable.

To find the cache, just follow Raad ny Foillan until the GPSr indicates that you should turn off (a few metres from the cache). Then descend steeply on easy grass until you see the SPOR!

Please be extra careful to replace everything exactly as found, so that others can also enjoy the HH trademark hide...you're looking for a green box.

Note that the path is fine for dogs on leads and for kids (as well as for others). But be aware that the unfenced cliff edge is nearby (very nearby in some places). Take care.

Note that the cache is to be found at the coordinates at the top of this page, although some have had doubts! The hint explains the cache name.
