Pwll Synd Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Andalusite: This cache has been disabled for some time and as the owner has not repaired/replaced it, or logged on since Monday 12 December 2011, I am archiving it.

Guidelines: "You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing."

Geocache Description:

A short distance from Ogof Pwll Synd cave entrance on the slopes of Foel Fraith in the Western Brecon Beacons.

The container is an ammo box hidden a short distance from the cave known as Pwll Synd. This cave is situated on the northeastern slopes of Foel Fraith and is best approached from the quarry car park on the bwlch (saddle) of the A4069 between Brynamman and Llangadog.

The entrance to the cave is a short collapsed rift that can easily be entered for a short distance before climbing and vertical equipment is required. There are 5 pitches in total which lead down to the bottom of this grade 4 cave, the longest being 15m in depth. The complicated series of narrow passages and small chambers eventually reach the muddy bottom. It takes about 5 hours to reach the bottom and return to the surface for a competant team of cavers. The cave was first entered in 1939 and there are currently nearly 1km of surveyed passage explored with not much scope for further exploration.

The walk in is fairly straight forward but you will need to be prepared for bad weather and wear appropriate mountain walking equipment. If there is any chance of it becoming misty then track your walk in so that you can retrace your steps.

This cache can easily be included with a number of other local caches to make a fabulous day in the mountains.
