Geocache Description:

The coordinates above are not the location of the cache, they are for a location in the middle of Chelmsford Massachusetts. The goal of this cache will be to locate and explore the high point of this town.

While we don't have much for high elevation in eastern Massachusetts we do have some interesting local high points. The goal of this cache is to have you visit the high point of Chelmsford. On a clear day in the winter months you will get some partial views to the south and east.

Homework

First, you'll need to do a little research to determine where the highest point of elevation in Chelmsford is located. Print out a copy of the picture below to bring with you. Also, see Double Bonus below -- you'll be missing out if you don't arrange a visit to the tower.

Field Work

Locate Chelmsford's high point and find the exact object in the picture below, which may or may not be at the exact highest spot.

This object is within 75' of the high point so some searching may be required. Once you've located this object you can project a waypoint to the cache. Using your GPS (or other tools) project the following waypoint:

Distance: 262 ft
Bearing: 77.94 deg True

This will provide you with the coordinates for the final cache container. The cache is a little larger than a micro, but shouldn't be hard to find. Bring something to write with.

Bonus

With a little more work you should be able to log another find (or two) on the same trip.

Double Bonus (added 4/27/07)

During a recent maintenance visit to the cache I discovered something very exciting about this area. Near the first part of the cache there is a 70' tall fire tower (another clue!). If there is a fire danger of 3 or more the tower is manned. On fire danger 3 days (not 4 and 5) the fire warden can invite you up -- in fact they are very happy to have company on slow days. You can call the tower before you leave to check the status at (978)256-2651. Just ask if visits to in tower are permitted on that day.

I would highly recommend making a trip on a day you can visit the tower, it is probably the single most impressive view I've ever had of northeastern Massachusetts. Visibility includes Mt. Wachusett and Mt. Monadnock as well as Tipling Rock (Sudbury) and Nashoba Hill with 360 degree views of the surrounding towns. See the photos from my 4/26/07 log.
