INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #309

APE CACHE

Welcome to Millgrove Cemetery, Millgrove Township, Steuben County, Indiana. Listen to what the mysterious SHADOW has to say about this place:

Five or Six veterans of the War of 1812 are buried in this cemetery, but I have not located all of their graves.

This is a very old and inactive cemetery, in Orland, which was the first settlement (1834) in the county (Vermont Settlement). The entrance gate is beside the parking lot of American Legion Post #423. There has been restoration work done here in the distant past, but time has once again taken it's toll. Many stones have broken, fallen, are tipping over and lots have been placed against the trees and the fence.

There are no government style markers here, but several veteran's flag holders can be seen. Some holders are beside markers, that the dates indicate a possibility of them being veterans of the War of 1812. One marker does have an inscription to that effect.

I was able to locate several pioneer settlers, who came and settled here prior to 1840.

There's a veterans memorial garden in front of the Legion Post. Be sure to pay a visit there. A helicopter and very nice memorial markers are displayed. --THE SHADOW

In the Spring of 1834, John STOCKER, father of L.H. STOCKER, prospected to Orland, Indiana from Windham Co. Vermont and chose Orland for the name of town by having first postmaster, Colonel Alexander CHAPIN open a hymn book. The first white child born was Sarah L. PIERCE daughter of Benjamin PIERCE b. Nov. 10, 1834.
