Samuel Crompton was one of Bolton's famous sons, he kick started the Industrial Revolution with his spinning mule invention. Crompton was born at 10 Firwood Fold (its the only house in Bolton with a thatched roof, please note its a private residence).
Firwood Fold contains some of the best preserved 17th century buildings in the North of England so do have a look round. Park at the roadside by Firwood Stables. The spinning mule was invented at nearby Hall'th'wood. Crompton was not able patent his invention so unfortunately his idea was copied and he died in poverty. The lodge lies below the fold and is a lovely lake, which is popular with anglers so please use stealth when seeking and replacing the cache. It's also a haven for birdwatchers and if you look hard enough you will see some old relics of its industrial past.
Firwood Fold now has its own web site.
