Geocache Description:

A visit to the Duke of York Tower!

York Tower dates from 1827 and is similar in style to Nelson’s Tower at Forres, where thunderbird30 has his “Helges Hole” cache. It is perched on the top of the Knock of Alves and is situated within the remains of a prehistoric fort. There is a story that suggests the tower was raised on the spot where Macbeth met the three witches and the area is reputed to be haunted, with strange indistinct shapes and high pitched screeches and chuckling! However, the tower actually commemorates the Duke of York, and it was built by Alexander Forteath whose tomb can be found nearby.

The above co-ordinates are for the tower itself – the actual cache is NOT HIDDEN at these coordinates. I have made this cache a small multi because groups of youths have come up here in the past and broken into the tower and the tomb, so I didn’t want to place the box itself near to these structures. Let’s hope this one isn’t jinxed like my last multi in this part of the world seems to be!

Park at N57 38.954 W003 23.893, being careful not to block the entrance to the construction site. Follow the dirt track up the hill – this is very steep (hence the high terrain rating) so be careful both going up and coming down. Once you have reached the top follow the grassy path which will lead you to the tower.
Good views south from the tower as there are no trees on this side.

A. Peer through the bars and look at the east side of the tomb. What month did George Forteath die in?

B. How many sides of the tower have cruciform windows?

C. What month is given on the stone plaque above the door?

D. How many faces can you see below the upper windows?

While you are here, have a look at the top of the flagpole – can you guess what it’s being used for now? Answer encrypted in hint section!

Cache can be found at N57 38.AB3 W003 24.CD6

In retrospect, we were perhaps a bit ambitious in placing such a large container in this hiding place, so please make sure that it well covered over when you leave.

Cache contents at time of placing:
Shoe Brush set
Dinosaur
String
Toy car
Magnetic Clips
Teabag holder
and possibly a card game, photo frame or bag clips - can't remember!

Thanks to my brother for giving permission to place this cache – he's the landowner's gamekeeper!
