Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden along the Genesee Valley Greenway Trail near the village of Scottsville.

It's name is taken from the local name for the small body of water shaped a bit like a keyhole located closeby.

The cache is a dark green 30 mm ammo container hidden near the Keyhole. It is located above spring flood water level and is accessible year round. The cache contains mostly kid-oriented treasures (matchbox cars, Nerf football, stickers) plus a few other odds 'n ends.

Please rehide the cache as you find it so muggles using the trail do not stumble upon it (it is located along one of the more frequently used sections of the Greenway).

Be sure take a moment to admire a nice example of old canal stonework located closeby!

----

Note! This cache is located near a public highway. However it is separated from the highway by private property. Please navigate to this spot only via the Greenway. Ample public parking is located along the trail a short walk away.

----

A bit of history: The Greenway Trail follows the route of the Genesee Valley Canal. The canal was built in the 1840’s to connect the Erie Canal in Rochester with the Allegheny River at Olean. Maintenance difficulties and competition from the then emerging technology of the railroad caused financial difficulties for the canal from the onset. The canal was shut down and abandoned in 1878.

A year or two after the canal’s demise railroad tracks were laid on former canal towpath. After several changes in ownership the railroad eventually became the Rochester Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1900. It operated into the mid-1960's when declining traffic resulted in it’s shutdown and abandonment.

In the mid 1990’s, work was begun to create a hiking trail along the abandoned railroad bed. With only a few short interruptions the Greenway Trail now extends continuously approximately 90 miles from Rochester to Hinsdale NY.
