Geocache Description:

Chain Pickerel Pool

Part 6 of the Up the Annis series. These caches are a challenging and educational puzzle based on the LaHave Salmon Pool Series series by Vintor and Gert. The Annis River series starts at the mouth of the Annis River and works its way upstream to the headwaters of this once famous Atlantic Salmon and Trout stream. Along the way, Geocachers will learn about each of seven species of fish that inhabit the river, and the pools where they were, or still are, fished. Each cache in the series is on a famous pool, and all are well camouflaged to protect against fisher-muggles. Each cache is in a small or medium lock lock box, with camo covering, and each contains the normal caching swag of a pen, pencil and logbook to record your find, as well as flies used to fish for the species the pool represents (all flies have barb protection). There are other items in each cache, like wilderness survival items, and some kiddie swag; Geocachers are asked to trade fairly – if you take a fly, leave a fly; if you take an item, leave an item. Each cache has in it a clue card for the next cache in the series (please make sure you leave the clue card for your fellow cachers), with a picture of a fish on one side, and three choices of species and coordinates on the reverse. If you follow the series correctly, each cache also has species information sheets, so you can learn about the fish, and eventually find all seven caches. The total time for all seven in order would be about 3 or 4 hours, depending on time of year, as stop three is in a park which is “closed” in winter and which requires a longer hike from parking off the Mood Road. All listed coordinates are for parking – please respect private property and use the parking coordinates!

Chain Pickerel were introduced in the 1980's to the Annis River and now are all the way up to this headwater- Lake Annis. The cache is near a beautiful beach, and just south of the beach in the summer are a type of lily pads called Pickerel Weed - fitting as they harbour a lot of these toothy fish!
Please use the parking coordinates and respect private property - the trail is an easy walk along the old railroad bed. The only "man-made" hide in the bunch - appropriate because it was human negligence that allowed these exotic fish into the watershed...
