This cache is located at Jones Park, Dartmouth. Every Town of Dartmouth park now has a Geocache. Visit all of the parks, they are less than 20 minutes away from eachother.
This cache is dedicated to our newest husky pup, Tundra (or as the receptionist at the local vet's said: "Named after the pickup truck?"...>AAAARRRRGG!). Tundra came into our household after Dancer was struck and killed by a car.
For most of the year, the park where the cache is located, is open to traffic. However, from June through the end of August, the town charges a parking fee. But if you walk in, admission is free.
The cache is on the upper part of Clarks Cove, and contains various trinkets including some "Save Buzzards Bay" bumper stickers from the Coalition for Buzzards Bay. (www.savebuzzardsbay.org) Tundra insisted that we place a bag of "Scoobie Snacks" in the container for all of the "Geo-dogs" who visit the cache.
Clarks Cove was formed by glacial action. When the glacier melted, it deposited large bolders and small rocks which are visible through out the cove. In the 1970s the waters in the cove were poluted by the New Bedford sewerage treatment plant. The "treatment" for sewerage was basically a 1 mile long, 3 food diameter pipe which poured untreated sewerage into Buzzards Bay. Tidal flow brough the "effluent" into the cove.
In the late 1980s the New Bedford treatment facility was upgraded and as a result, Clarks Cove has now become one of the cleanest bodies of water in the Buzzards Bay watershed.
However, more needs to be done to clean up the rest of the waters in the bay. Visit the Coalition's website to see how you can help.
