Geocache Description:

"White Cemetery" is located on Stockham Road off of SR 139 near Minford. It is the final resting place for pioneer founders of this area that once thrived. These same founders have connections back to the Mayflower and the infamous John Smith from Massachusetts in the late 1600's. Visit the grave of John White ((1794-1874) and his wife Silvia while here.

"White Hill", "White Run" and "White Cemetery" are all that remain today."Whites School" though historical is gone as well. The "White" Family roots run deep. From the Mayflower to Massachusetts, to New Hampshire to the French Grant in Scioto County and north from the Ohio River. Quite a family history connection.

The Mayflower Connection: From the "The White Family of Brookfield, MA- Westmoreland, NH and Scioto Co, OH."

"The West Brookfield area home of John White's was built on original land grant stands and was beautifully restored as the Salem Cross Inn. The home was finished by John White's family after his killing by Indians in a Massachusetts hay field July 22, 1710. The house was inhabited by his widow Prudence Hayward and his youngest son Cornelius White, who was born 6 months after his father's death. In total, eight generations of White descendants lived in the home. Listed on the National Historic Register, the house's front door latch holds a witch-mark, designed to protect the inhabitants.

During the time period that John White acquired his acreage we know Brookfield land was given to young men both to keep the local sons in the area and to attract the military men the town needed for protection against the Indians. We know that he was enumerated as Sergt. John White on the list of 30 October 1706 Brookfield inhabitants and was granted 62 acres of land 8 March 1710 provided he live in the place for four years. Four months later he was dead at the hand of Indians.

John White's parentage is a mystery this researcher would very much love to solve. Is he a grandson of Mayflower baby Peregrine White, as the house's current owners purport?

Descendants of John White

Generation No. 1

1. John White died 20 Jul 1710 in Brookfield, Worcester Co, MA. He married Prudence Hayward 26 Nov 1707 in Concord, Middlesex Co, MA. She was born 19 Jun 1687, probably in Concord, Middlesex Co, MA7, and died 27 Dec 1736 in Plainfield, Windham Co, CT8 and is buried in Old Settlers Cemetery.

Brookfield, MA Inhabitants 30 October 1706 - Sergt. John White History of North Brookfield, Mass, p. 175:
To insure (standing guards for the inhabitants) and to hold out inducements to the sons of the first planters to remain, the Committee, at the meeting held Mar. 8, 1710, granted to Sergt. John White, 42 acres of upland and 20 of meadow, "provided he live in the place four years after he is wholly disbanded, and pay rates."

History of North Brookfield, Mass. p. 176:
The most distressing disaster on our frontiers this year, happened at Brookfield. July 22 (1710) "six men, viz. Ebenezer Hayward, John White, Stephen Jennings, Benjamin Jennings, John Grosvenor and Joseph Kellogg were making hay in the meadows, when the Indians, who had been watching an opportunity to surprise them, sprang suddenly upon them, despatched five of them, and took the other (John White) prisoner. White, spying a small company of our people at some distance, jumped from the Indians that held him and ran to join his friends; but the Indian fired after him and wounded him in the thigh, by which he fell; but soon recovering and running again, he was again fired at and received his death wound."

Another interesting story about the Whites here is the adoption by Ana-Na-Ha, a full blood Cherokee by Mr. and Mrs. James White in 1816. History tells that Mr. White was on a hunting trip in Upper New York State with a party of Cherokees. Ana-Na-Ha was born and left in the woods to die because she was a sickly baby. Mr. White took her to his cabin where he and his wife raised and educated her, giving her the name of Jane White. She was a herbist and a midwife who freely doctored and cared for her neighbors in Madison Township in 1888.

Today this area is all agricultural. Only a few now carry the memories of a little community known as "White". The "White Cemetery" is the final resting place for yet another generation of Whites- born in the last 1700's and early 1800's who raised families and thrived in this territory when it was still wild.
