Geocache Description:

The South Carolina Geocachers Association (SCGA) will be conducting a cleanup event in the Edisto River watershed beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2006.  We have scheduled this event to coincide with the Friends of the Edisto (FRED) stewardship day.

We will meet at the coordinates posted above to gather supplies. We'll spread out to the cleanup sites based on the number of CITO participants.

FRED is a small group of citizens focusing on preserving the quality of water and habitat of the Edisto River watershed.  FRED cannot clean the entire watershed, so they ask volunteer groups to hold cleanup events throughout the year.  In previous years, the SCGA has helped clean stretches of the Edisto River and the boat landings that provide access to the Edisto River.  The Edisto River is part of the ACE Basin (Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto rivers) in which numerous caches are hidden.  This year, the SCGA has volunteered to clean popular fishing spots at points where highways cross Four Holes Swamp.

As part of the Edisto River watershed, the Four Holes Swamp drains the area between the Edisto River and Lake Marion to the north and between Orangeburg and Ridgeville to the east.  The Four Holes Swamp empties into the Edisto River upstream from Givhans Ferry State Park.  As a major property holder in Four Holes Swamp and a leader in conservation, Audubon South Carolina will provide logistical support for this SCGA CITO.  All those participating in the cleanup will also receive a pass to the Audubon Sanctuary at the Francis Beidler Forest.  The pass will be valid through the summer, but late spring is a terrific time to visit the swamp and see reptiles and songbirds in full breeding plumage.

The SCGA will clean the crossings at US Hwy 78, a.k.a. Minus Bridge; Horse Ford Rd. (SSR 56), a.k.a. Horse Ford Bridge; and Wire/Ridge Rd. (SSR 19), a.k.a. Harleys Bridge.  The individual coordinates are listed below.  The litter is on the banks of the swamp or trapped out in the water behind logs or stumps.   There are a few safe places to launch a kayak or canoe.  Supposedly, one can paddle from the Minus Bridge downstream to the Edisto River passing under Horse Ford Bridge and Harleys Bridge on the way.

These areas to be cleaned by the South Carolina Geocachers Association!

Trash bags and drinking water will be available at the coordinates posted for this page (Minus Bridge on US Hwy 78).  Please come dressed for the activity (including work gloves) and the weather.  Pack a dry set of clothes even if you do not intend to board a watercraft.  We encourage everyone to participate, but ask that for planning purposes interested individuals log a note to this cache as soon as possible.

The nearest food will be in Ridgeville.  Other eating establishments have opened, but the king still remains Duke's BBQ next to the railroad tracks.
