This cache, a standard ammo box, is placed to encourage people to visit the Olympic Discovery Trail. The Dan Kelly Adventure is a one mile section which winds through the forest above the lower Elwah River between Highway 112 and Karpen Road. (Dan Kelly was born in Ohio in 1861 and came west in 1888. He homesteaded a farm in the Eden Valley while also living in Port Angeles and would have hiked through this area many times between the town and his homestead. He was a blacksmith, cabinet maker and carpenter as well as deputy county treasurer and district fire warden and was well known throughout the county before dying in 1953 at age 91). The entry to the trail is off HWY 112 at N 48 06.274 W 123 33.770 and there is a nearby parking area. You can also access the cache by driving down Dan Kelly Road to Karpen Road (a logging road) and walking down it if the gate is not open. If the gate is open and you have a Discovery Pass you can also drive to within a short distance of the cache--but then you miss the beautiful hike. The Olympic Discovery Trail, which eventually will extend from Port Townsend to Forks, continues for several miles for those desiring a longer walk or mountain bike ride through the woods so plan to enjoy some time hiking or biking; a full map is available at the trail entrance.
Update 3-26-2023: The area has endured considerable change since the cache was placed 17 years ago. The old growth stump it hides in is almost completely disintegrated. The second growth forest where we placed it was logged a few years ago; but the third growth forest is coming back nicely. The cache has survived these changes well and it is still a nice place to stop and sit on a stump and enjoy a rest and snack as you walk the trail.
