Named after General Twining, a local resident, Twining Park is Monroe's largest park. The park has an F-86 sabre jet that was donated on July 4, 1960 on permanent display as a monument. Although the entire acreage of this city-wide park has been landscaped, only a part has been developed for intensive recreational uses. Developed features include 3 shelter buildings, 63 picnic tables, a band shell, 2 tennis courts, a basketball court, 2 lighted ball fields, playground apparatus in two areas, a concession stand, 3 paved parking areas, a paved walkway one-half mile in length with 1 rest shelter, 5 horseshoe courts, 4 lighted sand volleyball courts, a tot lot, and excercise/fitness course. Restrooms are provided in the shelter building in the center of the park, in the bandshell and near the north shelter house. In winter, a public ice skating rink and a youth hockey rink are provided along with a warming house. In winters with adequate snow cover, cross country ski trails and sledding hills are available.
