Geocache Description:

The cache is situated along the shore near to the small village of Aldingham, which overlooks Morecambe Bay. Suggested parking co-ordinates are N 54 07.804, W 003 05.914.

The village itself is said to once have been almost a mile long and that the church was the centre of the village but local legend claims that storms and tidal waves washed away many of the early cottages and reduced it to its current size. The village was the site of a settlement in Saxon times and is recorded in the Domesday Book.

Like many coastal villages, Aldingham had the reputation of being a smuggler's village. Brandy from France and tobacco from America were supposedly hidden in the church crypt.

The name Aldingham is believed to be derived from 'Hald-hing-ham': a habitation near hanging stones.
