Audrey Milligan Park, Barrie Ontario Canada.
A Ducks Unlimited provincially significant wetland in the core of
Downtown Barrie? That can't be possible! Well believe it!
Although not large by any means, you will find that when you visit
this cache at Audrey Milligan Park that the significance of this
park is apparent. Beavers, Swans, Ducks, Squirrels, Turtles and
countless varieties of songbirds are only part of the wildlife that
is available to be seen at the park. Make sure to plan for some
time to stay and enjoy the park as it was meant to be seen!
About Audrey Milligan Park
About 1940, Mr. Bert Young purchased the property on the South side
of Perry Street. Over the years, he cleaned up the swamp behind his
property removing dead trees and trash, and built a dam to create a
wildlife pond. Trees were planted, foot paths established, benches
and bridges constructed and the first pair of Swans introduced.
With the help of neighbor Derek Jones, a dike was built to control
silt build-up and the Beaver dams monitored to control water
levels. It was a labor of love. As many bird and animal species and
different flora became established, the area became a favorite
quiet place for local residents. Mr. Young's vision of the park had
become a reality. Mr. Young moved away in 1981. The care and
feeding of the swans passed to his son Doug and later to Mr. Jones
who continues to supervise the area. In 1990, Miss Audrey Milligan
willed her property on the west side of the ponds to the City for
parkland. The City purchased part of the Young property and named
the area "Audrey Milligan Park". The Huronia Rotary Club built new
bridges and started a major yearly clean-up in 1992. Ducks
Unlimited installed nesting boxes and signs in 1994 and continues
to monitor wildlife. In 1995, City Council officially named the
pond beside Perry Street "Young-Jones Pond" to recognize the years
of dedication by Bert Young and Derek Jones.
About The Cache
This cache is not large, but will contain enough space for small
trade items. It is well hidden from the muggle-passer-by, but
should not be hard at all for a geocacher to locate. It is close
enough to the trail that anyone can see you doing the geo-dance so
please approach your find with caution.
