Geocache Description:

An offset cache that will ask you to find clues at several of the memorials around the Town of Brighton. First in the Brighton History Cache Series.

(From the Town of Brighton History web page ) The Town of Brighton is nestled among the scenic lakes and quiet farm fields of Southern Franklin County, NY. However, like many towns in the northern Adirondacks, it is more a political boundary than a Town –a conglomeration of smaller hamlets. If asked where they live, most Brighton residents would answer Gabriels, McColloms, Paul Smiths or Rainbow Lake. The Town of Brighton is home to some rich and interesting history. It was founded in 1858, and by the turn of the century, Brighton was home to three summer resort hotels (in McColloms, Rainbow Lake and Paul Smiths), four churches and a chapel, two railroad stations, four post offices, three schools, three cemeteries, a 'paved' road, and a new TB sanatorium, the "San" at Gabriels, built almost single-handedly by Sister Mary of Perpetual Help Kiernan of the Sisters of Mercy. There was a power plant (built by Paul Smith) on the St. Regis River, telegraph and telephone services, and a number of camps had been built around the larger lakes within the town.

Now the hotels at Rainbow Lake and McColloms are gone. Paul Smith's, in accordance with the will of Phelps Smith, is now a college. The Gabriels San is a minimum security correctional facility. However, family farms still make up a large percentage of the land use in the town. The memorials placed throughout the town honor various Brighton residents that have contributed to the rich history of the town.

To find this cache, you will need to use your geo-sleuthing abilities. Visit the memorials listed at the waypoints below and find the clue at each stop. Once you have found them all you will have the coordinates for the cache location. You can visit the memorials in any order, but we recommend following the order listed below since it will allow you to drive along and visit the sites in geographical succession, ending up at the memorial that is closest to the final cache location. The Brighton Town Board is aware of and enthusiastic about this cache but because some of the locations are near public buildings, we recommend that you use stealth while searching and avoid looking for this cache at night or during times when any events are being held at the buildings so as to avoid arousing undue concern.
