Chasing hope, fate, treasure or luck, this cache can be found in a place that has apparently witnessed many such ventures. The name of this drainage reminded me of an Irish reel known as “The Five Mile Chase” and hence the cache name, however once in the area, the mining history of this place is obvious and is the more appropriate theme.
Depending on the approach, this can be a nice hike which will be rewarded with a view of the Five Mile Creek drainage and past evidence of mines, prospects and other undertakings. The cache itself is a small thermos jug and the original contents include: A clothespin, an LED light, a couple of guitar picks, a crystal, a dog whistle, a lizard and the dots to a few reels which include “The Congress”, Farewell to Connaught”, “Drowsy Maggie” and, of course, the cache namesake: “The Five Mile Chase”, of which, one will find two slightly different settings in both G and A. For the musically inclined, I prefer the one in A, although G may be the more common version. This tune’s title may refer to the excitement surrounding a famous Irish horse race, but once again, chasing the dreams of another age with hard work, risk and potential fortune at Five Mile Gulch calls the tune for this cache. Sit down, enjoy the view, toast the ghosts of the past with a favorite beverage and have fun!
The first two posts beg an explanation: "The log book and pencils really are there. A glimpse at the hint may tell one where. If not found again, by the third such note, a sweet, steep hike shall make me a pack goat."
