Seeking the cache involves a walk through woodland and across parkland, north of Lostwithiel, through the Fowey River valley with stunning views of Restormel Castle. Turn off the A390 in Lostwithiel at the signpost for the Duchy Nursery.
This cache is a replacement for my previous cache 'Castle Views' which has disappeared following considerable clearance of the cache area. The new location is about a quarter of a mile away. The cache is placed near to Restormel Castle and offers several different views of the building. Considering it was built c1100 the castle is in fairly good shape! A typical motte and bailey style it is an impressive sight high on the hill overlooking the Fowey Valley. The castle belongs to the Duchy of Cornwall, but is administered by English Heritage and open to visitors during the holiday season (see English Heritage website). For the best views and an enjoyable walk the recommended parking is around N50º 25.324, W 004º 39.533. Go through the pedestrian gate at the north east end of the car park and follow your GPSr. The cache is a camouflaged cylindrical container with a few goodies to swap. The walk to the cache and back is just over 2 miles. As it involves some forest footpaths, which can be muddy at times, it would be unsuitable for buggies etc. A short diversion will take you to the castle itself - worth the visit if you haven't been before.
Refreshments and toilets are to be found in the nearby ancient stannary town of Lostwithiel, or for a quick light bite the Duchy Nursery Coffee Shop offers tea, coffee and cakes etc.
