Geocache Description:

Location: McNeely Lake Park
This cache is part of the TV Tales-n-Trivia series inspired by the entertainment and memories provided by classic TV shows. To obtain this cache (a 30-caliber ammo box), a short hike with little or no bushwhacking is required, depending upon your approach. There’s a chance you might see friends of Mister Ed on your journey or spot a show in the sky, but don't get too close to either.

Note: If you hike on a trail where horses are allowed, please yield the right of way and try not to scare them with sudden movements or noises. Trails are multi-use (open to hikers/cachers), but some trails are used primarily for horseback riding.

Hello...I'm Mister Ed!
“A horse is a horse, of course, of course,
And no one can talk to a horse of course,
That is of course, unless the horse
Is the famous Mister Ed."

Even if you weren’t alive in the early to mid 1960s, chances are good that you might recognize those familiar lyrics. The exploits of the talking horse and his owner Wilbur Post have certainly caused many to smile or at least groan good-naturedly throughout the past four decades. From racehorse to horsetronaut, from pool player to pilot, from songwriter to salesman, from movie star to artist, Mister Ed was anything and everything but your ordinary horse, of course.

The cache container is a small ammo box containing an FTF prize (no trade required), logbook, pencils, and theme-related trade items. After finding the cache and signing the log, trade objects if you wish. Please close the container and return it carefully to its appropriate spot to keep it a fun challenge for the next cacher. Mosquito/tick repellant is highly recommended during spring and summer weather. Fire ants also reside in the area.

Themes and Trade Items:
Recommended trade items for this cache could relate to horses or classic TV shows. Feel free to trade even if your item doesn’t fit one of the cache themes, but please do not leave food, scented items, or weapons. Travel bugs, signature items, and small objects are welcome in the cache as space permits.

FTF honors go to jblane and (mle)!

Trivia Test:
Answer the following trivia questions about the show to have your name added to Mister Ed’s Honor Roll.
  • 1. What was the occupation of Ed’s owner, Wilbur Post (played by Alan Young)?

  • 3. What is the last name of Wilbur and Carol’s original next-door neighbors?

Additional Fun Facts:
  • The show ran from 1961-1966.
  • Guest stars on the show included Zsa Zsa Gabor, Clint Eastwood, Leo Durocher, Sandy Koufax, and George Burns.
  • The show won the Golden Globe award for best TV show in 1963.
  • Bamboo Harvester, the horse who played Mister Ed on TV, most likely died in 1968, two years after the show ended, though many theories exist surrounding other dates for his death, primarily due to horses who were used as doubles for promotional purposes.
