This is a short 200-metre section of the eight-mile circular
Miners' Heritage Trail that connects five ex-coal mining villages
in East Durham. The trail features interpretation sites explaining
the area's mining past as this played an important part in
developing the community culture. A leaflet has been produced to
accompany the trail. The project involved many local groups’
researching and planning the trail and carrying out research to
provide the necessary historical information.
Please beware that the location can be a bit mucky (but not so
much underfoot as you’ll see). This is entirely avoidable if you
don’t go fumbling around without looking where you are putting your
hands. It’s doable in the dark but, again, take a torch and don’t
grope at things. Or fall down holes. Ta.
You need a tool for this one and there is one nearby. Stay on
the disused road and go to waypoint "TOOL". YOU’LL NEED TO USE THE TOOL VERY NEAR TO WHERE YOU FIND IT.
THERE’S NO NEED TO WANDER ABOUT WITH IT. Once you’ve used
the tool (after putting it back, please) allow everything to settle
back in place and continue your quest using the coordinates you
just found with the tool. Pleas make sure it's back where it should
be. A push may be required. Now head further up the road towards
Durham and around to the cache rather than taking shortcuts across
fields, through thorns and the like.
It is not necessary to
force, poke, lever, pry, push or generally damage anything. Once
you’ve figured it out, everything will fall into place. Climbing
and/or tunnelling are not required.
