A nifty small cache is placed in an absolute stunning area of our beautiful country – on the road to Rhodes. It is a gravel road and travelling takes a lot longer than normal travel – the 60km to Rhodes will take approximately an hour – time enough to appreciate the scenery.
The steel bridge over the Kraai River is a well-known landmark in the region. On your way to Rhodes you will cross this bridge – the area is called Moshesh's Ford. Apparently the Basuto king, Moshesh, used this ford to cross the river in his early wars. On the righthand side of the bridge (when you go towards Rhodes) you will see the confluence of the Sterkspruit and the Bell River just beyond the weir – these two rivers flow together to form the Kraai River which passes under the bridge.
On the northern side of the bridge is a mountain formation called the Belmore Crater and on the right is a steep little "koppie" known as "Bell se Kop". The Belmore Crater is better visible from a distance as you travel toward the bridge from Barkly East.
I frequently visit these beautiful streams in summer to cast a line and tango with the wild rainbow trout of the area. Please do not fish the waters without a permit – that will be considered poaching. A sign on the side of the road gives details where permits are obtainable.
As you are here now, travel to Rhodes (about 27 km further along the road) and enjoy the astonishing natural beauty of the area – it is recommended that you plan a stay over in the beautiful little town. The cache is a 0.3l plastic container, hidden near the bridge. PLEASE BE CAREFUL and PLEASE hide the container well after your visit. Make sure that it is not easily visible and make sure that you are not exposing your visit too much to the kids of the farm school nearby … they will certainly "poach" the cache.
Enjoy the hunt and take time to enjoy the magnificent scenery … spring and fall is good times to visit – the trees are at their best display then (see the pics of fall). But a visit anytime of the year is worth all the trouble – in winter you can expect snow on the higher mountains and can go skiing at Tiffendell – SA's only ski resort – nearby.
