It is thought that Ballycopeland Windmill was built in c.1780 and it was first shown on an O.S. Map in the 1830s. Grain growing was popular in County Down and Ballycopeland was only one of over 100 working windmills.
Today only Ballycopeland windmill remains having been restored to its former glory.
The windmill and the Millar’s house are open to the public at the following times:
Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 6pm
Sunday 2pm to 6pm
But you can visit the car park (N 54* 36.443 W 005* 33.348) and walk round the outside at any time.
Take the Movilla road out of Newtownards (B 172). Turn right along Ballyblack Road East towards Millisle and left along Moss Road following the signpost to the windmill.
