The coordinates above are the starting point, not the cache coordinates. This quiet and scenic walk is flat and roughly 3km along public rights of way. It can be done as a circular walk. It is suitable for the whole family, although it does at times bring you to some slippery ground near the water's edge. In summer you can buy icecream at the locks, where there is also a fresh water supply and WCs just past the lock keeper's house.
The starting point is the Abingdon Bridge, an elegant bridge started in 1416. We recommend you park at N51 40.043 W001 16.660. The cost is £1 for two hours during the day. You can also park for free anytime at N51 39.988 W001 17.173 in Caldecot Road, about 15 minutes' walk away. From Abingdon Bridge, follow the Thames for about 700 metres upstream (approximately north-east) to the Abingdon Locks.
- Monks first cut the Abbey Millstream in the year A55.
- Swift Ditch lock was opened in 162B.
The cache is at N51 3A.A58 W001 15.5BB.
The cache is a plastic Tupperware-type container wrapped in a plastic bag. From the cache you can return by the same route, or you can retrace your footsteps for a few minutes, then follow a footpath across fields and along a lane directly back to the recommended parking.
