A day at the zoo Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

fishiam: The beginning of the end for fishiam. Too much pettiness, unpleasantness and disrespect have taken the joy out of the game.

Removed the container today and will place the coin and TB somewhere else.

Geocache Description:

A new and improved zoo cache!

This multi-cache at Woodland Park Zoo replaces an earlier one (GCRRWP) that had two faults: it could be (and was) shortcutted (i.e., found and logged without visiting the zoo) and the final was a micro. This new and improved version has more waypoints, requires photographic evidence of having gone to the zoo, and ends at a container that we will keep stuffed with small animals for taking/trading. Hopefully that will entice families with kids to do the cache.

From Wikipedia:
The Woodland Park Zoo, which occupies the western half of Woodland Park on Green Lake, began as a small menagerie on the Woodland Park estate of Guy C. Phinney, Canadian-born lumber mill owner and real estate developer. Opened in 1889, the 188-acre Woodland Park was sold to the city for $5,000 in cash and the assumption of a $95,000 mortgage on December 28, 1899, by Phinney's wife (Phinney had died six years earlier, in 1893). The sum was so large that the Seattle mayor vetoed the acquisition, only to be over-ruled by the city council. In 1902, the Olmsted Brothers firm of Boston was hired to design the city's parks, including Woodland Park, and the next year the collection of the private Leschi Park menagerie was moved to Phinney Ridge. As of 2004, the zoo includes 65 acres (263,000 m²) of exhibits and public spaces. It is open to the public daily, and an entrance fee is required. Its collection includes: * 1,145 animal specimens * 290 animal species * 22 arthropod colonies * 7,000 trees * 50,000+ shrubs and herbs * 1,000+ plant species Woodland Park Zoo had 1,085,868 visitors in 2003.

There are a total of six waypoints for you to visit around the zoo - they are all listed below. At five of them, you will look for information to help you find numbers necessary to compute the coordinates to the final. At one of them - Z2, the PIX waypoint - you will find a set of gallows with the bodies of spiders and a head hole where you place your face and have a picture taken. IN ORDER TO LOG THIS CACHE YOU MUST SUBMIT A PICTURE TAKEN OF YOU AT ONE OF THE SPIDER BODIES. See picture below for an example. (If you are reticent to have your photo posted on the web, merely send me the photo directly as proof and that will suffice)

The posted coordinates are for the West parking lot. If you park there and enter the West Gate, I recommend the following order for the waypoints: Z3, Z4, Z5, Z6, Z2, Z1. If you park in the much larger south lot, consider doing the waypoints in this order: Z1, Z2, Z3, Z4, Z5, Z6.

Once you've collected all the numbers, find a comfy seat and do a little math:

North = 47 39.(A+B)(A+D-E)(F-G) West = 122 21.(H-I)(J+K)(N-L-M)
checksum (all 15 digits): 45

7/30/06 - correction made to formula - North coordinate was off by .010

The final is located outside the zoo but within the broad confines of Woodland Park

Enjoy your Day at the Zoo!

OK, I've waited long enough to congratulate them: A big WooHoo to The Mercury Project and FunnyNose for their workday FTF!
