Geocache Description:

The Adventure Begins...
The Saving Of Travis L. Bugg

Alert - Alert - Alert! Your help is urgently needed!

Agent Gone Missing

APB - Travis L. Bugg - Agent 007½

One of our most deeply undercover operatives, Travis L. Bugg (he usually goes by the name “Trav”) has been taken into custody and put in a cell cleverly disguised as a geocache. Trav has consistently been one of our best and most productive operatives. He’s brought us detailed information regarding the likes of P.H., E.C., I.B.C. and D.L.H. and how they’ve consistently found nearly each and every cache placed in front of them. But now, Trav has gone missing – believed to be in the hands of the enemy. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to SAVE him… But, to do so, you’ll need to know several things before you start.

  • First, be prepared for FUN! There are some difficult elements, and some easy, but mostly, it's all here in FUN!!

  • Next, bring along a cell phone – or 50 cents. You’ll need them as well.

  • Third, be sure to thoroughly read your instructions at each and every stage. ONE small mistake and you could compromise the entire operation and we’ll have to disavow any knowledge of you or your mission.

  • Fourth, you might want to bring along a pencil, a piece of paper and a calculator for some simple calculations and notes along the route. This isn’t necessary, but it just might help.

  • And, finally, bring your courage. Agent Trav L. Bugg (Agent 007½) is counting on you. And, if by chance you’re able to free Agent Bugg, PLEASE bring another operative to take his place. If you don’t have another operative to replace him with, you can just show Trav the light of day, and return him to his cell (just seeing the outside again will make him smile – and then, sign the log for full credit and to verify your success in this mission – and then, if you’d like, trade within the cache).

And, now... Prepare yourself...

The Adventure Begins...

At the first stage, you'll find a gentleman. He won't talk, but he will communicate with you in another way. He was a key operative for us - so, he's still willing to help. Here's what you need to do...

First, you'll need to calculate the value of his name. His entire name (including his middle initial).

For example, if his name was Trav L. Bugg, the T would be worth 20 as it's the 20th letter of the alphabet. The "r" would be worth 18. So, you would add that 20 to 18. You would simply continue this process with each letter in his name - adding as you go.

Now that you know what to do, perform this action with the entire name you find at this first stage.

Next, find the year the Geodetic Survey was conducted. Add the digits of that year together.

Finally, when you've calculated the values of "his name" and "the year of the Geodetic Survey", take those totals and place them in the following formulas (pay attention to the +'s and -'s) :

N 46o 42.{OldN + [NameValue x 5] - 22}

* Where OldN = the final 3 digits (N) of THIS stage.

W 092o 06.{OldW - [SurveyValue x 25] - 4}

* Where OldW = the final 3 digits (W) of THIS stage.

Your checksum N (last 3 digits only) = 18

Your checksum W (last 3 digits only) = 11

For the second stage, you’ll be directed to a building filled with key operatives possessing vital information to access your safe house.

THIS STAGE WILL REQUIRE A CELL PHONE OR ACCESS TO A PAY PHONE.

To learn the numbers you’ll need to dial, go inside the building and turn right. Ask this simple question to the first operative you see: "What's the phone number here?". They have been trained to look at you somewhat quizzically and act as if they don't know why you're asking. However, they will give you the phone number you're looking for. DO NOT go to the rear of the establishment and ask back there. You will receive incorrect information. Once you have the number, the checksum for the number they gave you should be: 33. If it is, perform the following functions:

IGNORING THE AREA CODE -

Add the first three digits together of the phone number you just received.

Add that total to 715.

This result will give you the first 3 numbers you'll need to dial.

Next, to calculate the final 4 numbers, add the last 4 digits of the phone number you just received.

Add that total to 0316.

This result will give you the final 4 numbers you'll need to dial.

When you’ve calculated the number to call, you can reach your safe house (cleverly disguised as a local business). Dial the number you've calculated - and - if your call reaches:

The Duluth Playhouse, then ABC = 731

The Marcus Theatre Movie Hotline, then ABC = 198

The Duluth Public Library, then ABC = 440

The US Maritime Museum, then ABC = 921

Your next stage is located at:

N 46o 42.ABC

W 092o 04.616

For the third stage, you’ll receive your detailed instructions at the undisclosed location. Please pay close attention to these instructions. These instructions will lead you to the next 2 locations – in a specific order. (Stages 4 and 5). As always, DON'T WORRY! Those of us at the agency will be sure there’s no confusion here. Your instructions will be perfectly clear - and, they won't self-destruct in 5 seconds. You'll be able to read - and re-read them if you need to. We promise!

In this fifth stage, you’ll find a code. The final coordinates to the cell in which Agent 007½ (Travis L. Bugg) is incarcerated can be arrived at by performing the following:

StUdY tHiS cOdE. CaReFuLlY. It's not too difficult if you just study it a little bit... If you crack this final code, you'll get extra credit as a TOP NOTCH AGENT IN THE FORCE! As your primary contact within the Agency, I can't emphasize enough - study this code located at this undisclosed location. One mistake could be fatal for Agent Bugg.

Once you're comfortable that you've cracked the code, you'll know the exact location of our incarcerated operative.

May the force be with you. Or something like that. For your tireless efforts, The Agency thanks you, Agent Bugg thanks you - and, most of all,
TEAM PETEY
thanks you!!
